Almost a third of his life we spend in sleep, and sometimes the dream world seems no less tangible than the real world. But, alas, with all our desire we can't affect what happens in the dream. Can you? The answer to this question will help to give lucid dreaming.

In a dream a man is powerless; we can only go with the flow, without any effect on events and without realizing that what is happening to us only dreams. Can I somehow force myselfto realize that dream. and to some extent manage its content? Yes, it is this opportunity that we are provided with lucid dreams.

This term was introduced Frederik van Eden. a Dutch writer and a psychiatrist. Under the conscious dream is meant an altered state of consciousness in which a person realizes that he is asleep and is able to control the content of his sleep.

Lucid dreaming starts, or during a normal sleep — then over time, the dreamer realizes he is sleeping, a man enters a lucid dream directly from the waking state without losing awareness. Usually this state is achieved spontaneously  with a very sensitive dream.

Lucid dreaming has found its application in psychological and psychotherapeutic practice. Thanks to the lucid dreams one can experience a situation which in real life is impossible. Find a way out of such situations, it can assess their own reactions and use this information to self-knowledge and introspection .

Also lucid dreaming can be used to combat lack of confidence and even various kinds of phobias. Faced with the phobia of "nose to nose" in a dream and defeated it, much easier then to get rid of fear in real life. For example, if you are afraid of heights. and in the dream fly, then after waking fear can erode: you will no longer be afraid of falling.

Recurring dreams will help to fight lack of confidence. Usually in life, this uncertainty manifests itself in similar situations: we are afraid to call by phone to unfamiliar people or the first to start a conversation in companies. Conscious dreams with similar, typical stories allow us to change the story lines, adjusting the situation "for themselves." Then this experience can be transferred to real life.

Is it possible learn lucid dreaming. Yes, there are special practices that allow you to learn to keep a sense of awareness in a dream and control it, but it will take a long time. There are special exercises that either increase the probability of "waking up in a dream", i.e. awareness, or they help to keep consciousness at the moment of falling asleep.

May also help diary of dreams. every day you need to describe in as much detail everything that you dreamed. This will help develop a good memory of dreams. To help enter into a conscious dream can andhypnosis  (including self-hypnosis). The dreamer comes up with a conventional sign. When this sign appears in a dream, a person realizes that he is asleep. From this moment begins a conscious dream.

How to understand that you have entered a lucid dream? Stephen Laberge, a leader in the study of lucid dreaming and offers simple techniques to distinguish a lucid dream from reality :

  • close your mouth and hold your nose with your fingers — if you sleep, you will be able to continue to breathe
  • try double-quote the inscription — in the dream, she can change
  • try to scroll the previous minute in the head — in the dream it most likely will not be able to do
  • turn on or off the light using switch — in a dream it may not work
  • long look at your hands — in the dream, their appearance begins to change.

Unlike reality, in a lucid dream can not work causation  - a feeling is created that "something goes wrong". But all these methods do not guarantee a 100% result: if a person wants to be convinced that this is a reality, he will not understand what is in a dream.

Lucid dreaming has not been studied thoroughly, but is used in psychotherapy. The main thing — not to get involved  and not to make lucid dreams into the cult, trying to replace them with real life, as do some admirers of esoteric teachings.
