Wedding traditions in Russia
Each country has its own wedding traditions and customs. Always very interesting to read about unusual wedding ceremonies of other Nations, but hardly anyone wants to include them in my own wedding. Most brides and grooms prefer to follow the usual wedding traditions in Russia.
Wedding traditions in Russia originate in Ancient Russia, some of them related to pagan wedding rituals of the Slavs. Of course, the time made its corrections, and many wedding traditions "went modern". There is a new tradition, for example, the first dance of the newlyweds for their chosen music. And some traditions (for example, the throwing of the bouquet) were borrowed from the West only relatively recently, with the help of Hollywood movies.
Wedding day begins not with a meeting at the registry office and the bride. In ancient times, the groom bought the bride relatives in a literal sense, for the money. Now the money is in the rite of the ransom faded into the background, and the ransom is a series of comic trials for the groom. Usually the ransom is prepared by young friends, led by the senior witness. And before the redemption of the young often receive a blessing from the parents (mothers).
When young out of the registry office, they sprinkle them with grain (now most often rice, but in the past this rite was used oats or millet), symbolizing wealth. And before the holiday feast the parents are treated the newlyweds with bread and salt. In the old days the bread was baked by the parents, now, of course, the loaf often baked to order.
The breaking off or cutting off pieces of loaf performed the functions of divination, for example, who would be born first, a girl or a boy. Now usually guess the rule of the house: who will bite off (or break off) a bigger piece, that will be the main. This tradition is relatively new, before the chief was always the husband.
And when the parents will say their first word at the wedding table, is the rite of the kindling of the hearth. The couple are holding a large candle, and the parents lit a thin candle (I used a torch). Now this ceremony is often transferred to the end of the wedding dinner: candles look beautiful when it is dark and you can turn off the light.
When the gala dinner is over, the young go home - they will have their first wedding night. In the old days the young were sent home, while the barn, in the bath or even in the barn. It was believed that if their first bedchamber will be kept a secret, it will keep them from the evil hex and the evil eye.
In our time in the evil eye it is hard to believe, but the young often still seek to spend their wedding night in the luxurious Bridal Suite. Although now the first night the couple are usually considered money and gifts or sacked out after a busy day, and not having sex.
If newly husband and wife still go home the husband often carries wife over the threshold on his hands. The roots of this beautiful tradition also growing from pagan times. Then the wife moved to the house in my husband and believed that the house might be treated unkindly by the man from another race. So the wife carried across the threshold on his hands to deceive the house, saying that it is not a strange adult man and newborn infant.
Now this beautiful custom, like many other wedding traditions in Russia, lost its original meaning. in brownies we don't believe, and the wife always moves into the house to her husband (it often happens Vice versa, or young people moving into a new apartment). But still brides continue to carry over the threshold: why not make it pleasant and not to imply that the husband prepared his young wife to carry on hands in literal and figurative sense?
Wedding traditions in Russia are very diverse and numerous. all of them care to remember. Therefore, when preparing the wedding be sure to discuss with the master of ceremonies of scenario. A good toastmaster needs to understand wedding customs and traditions, you can choose the ones you like with.
