How to use a compass
An indispensable tool for all lovers of fishing, outdoor activities and simply, people who want to relax from the disgusted life in large cities, get out on the nature. But what if the nearest town is a few kilometers away, and you are a little confused in choosing a direction? Of course, even from school lessons, we were taught to navigate the moss, the sun. You can climb a tree to determine the motion vector. Just what for, if it is much easier to understand how to use the compass and how the compass works.
Before proceeding to the "practical" part, let's briefly review the notation that may be present on most of them:
- S (from the English. South) – South
- W (from the English. West) – West
- E (from the English. East) – East
- N (from the English. North) – North
- SW – South West
- SE – South East
- NE - northeast
- NW - North-West.
Often, instead of letters, degrees from 1 to 360 are applied to the north. For some it is more convenient, for someone not, but the principle is the same.
How does the compass work
The principle of the device is interaction with the magnetic field of the planet. More precisely, with the horizontal magnetic field of the Earth. The magnetized arrow of the device, along the lines of force of the magnetic field, rotates about the axis and is always parallel to the magnetic field line. Thus, it is simple and complex at the same time. The arrow will always point north, and its weight should be very small, along with high magnetization, so that the weak magnetic field of the globe affects it.
How to use a compass in the forest
The problem of modern devices in dependence on the power supply. Of course, the same GPS with a map display and your location – a much more understandable thing, if you, accidentally, lost, but he is not always available. Therefore, revenue as ten years ago, comes the old and the familiar assistant – compass.
Before going on a trip, do not be lazy, open the map and explore the area. Otherwise, if you absolutely do not know the landmarks, the compass will be useless. Pay special attention to the location of the nearest settlements, rivers and lakes. Write down the side of the light in the tripod notepad, in which, approximately, these objects will be and remember the azimuth (the side of the light or degrees, which are designated instead of the sides on some products) of the entrance to the forest. Write it down as well.
The picture above will help you learn how to walk the compass in the forest correctly.
It provides basic guidelines that you should know.
If in more detail, then look at the dotted line, which passes through the azimuths at 315 and 135 degrees. The road is the place from where you go into the forest (315 degrees), and 135 degrees is the place where you go deep into the forest. In relation to such azimuths, you can also compose the locations of other landmarks, which are given above. Try not to deviate from this direction, but even if you get off the road, it's enough to find on the compass the ratio of the azimuths you need and go to one side or another.
Despite the large number of different electronic devices, the good old compass, as before, continues to save the lives of travelers and ordinary people lost in the vastness of Mother Earth. Follow some simple instructions for working with the device, and you will always be good at navigating and will never get lost, finding a way out of any place at least of the forest, even of the desert.
